Baghdad was once a modern city, a city of awakening with red double decker busses on its streets, light-hearted music, Egyptian comedies in the cinemas and exquisitely dressed women studying at the universities. And then along came... a forty-year dictatorship, war, oil production and civil unrest; horrific scenes, ruined buildings, bombed and burned out archives.
In the award winning documentary «Iraqi Odyssey» Iraqi-Swiss filmmaker Samir documents the story of his diasporic family and thereby reassembles a piece of Iraqi history. With our interactive web project iraqiodyssey.com we would like to continue what Samir has started and create a collection that presents a different Iraq, an Iraq that has been lost during years of western reporting.
5 million Iraqis are living in exile. The platform offers them the possibility to become active, to share documents, videos and family stories. All these personal experiences put together create a rich archive.
