ABOUT A COW
by Pavla Ba?tanová
A patchwork of brief situations, all inspired by true stories, taken from the lives of cows. We start with an idyllic image of a pasture where cows are enjoying free movement and fresh air after having spent the winter in the cowshed. The joy is disrupted by a helicopter flying over the meadow. As a messenger from the human world, it brings some tension and possible danger into the story.
This tension is explored in the following scenes:
- by the industrial building of a factory farm from which the cows are taken to the slaughterhouse
- in the path of a cow-fugitive, wishing to change its destiny and escape a sure death
- on the road in a cattle truck amongst the overheated and exhausted animals being taken God-knows-where
- between water and fire when cows are exposed to natural disasters
- behind an electric fence where dehorned cows are living a miserable existence
- in an anonymous modern environment, where the productivity of dairy cows is artificially increased by robotic massage and screening of ?artificial happiness? in VR
This film is not merely critical, it also shows more optimistic images from the life of cows, who are closely connected to the human world:
- a scene in India where cows are still considered sacred and as creatures to be worshipped
- a therapy garden where a cow is healing people by its calm and its milk
- a devastated landscape where a cow will offer its help to another animal and becomes a part of herd of female deer
The circle comes to a close in the idyllic pasture where the whole story started. A young girl is sitting in the grass and playing accordion. Music-loving cows gather around her and listen with enthusiasm. A human, a cow and music meet in the last scene in peace and with love, allowing us to hope for a better world.
