THE PRICE OF TRUTH
by Vera Freitag
THE PRICE OF TRUTH is a dual portrait of two whistleblowers. Margrit Zopfi and Sherron Watkins informed the public about the financial fraud taking place at their workplace and paid a high price for revealing the truth.
In her function as controller, Margrit Zopfi made public the abuse of social assistance funds of the city of Zurich in 2007. Her act deeply divided the public. As a consequence of her exposure, she and her fellow colleague Esther Wyler were pronounced guilty of the violation of official secrecy.
Sherron Watkins was vice-president of the US service and energy corporation Enron. In 2001 she informed the corporate management about contradictions in the balances. It was later revealed that the corporation had systematically tampered with the books. Enron went bankrupt.
These two women are linked by a strong sense of societal and moral responsibility, which ultimately led them to expose the truth about abuses at their workplaces. Their story is told in personal discussions and interviews with their closest allies and various experts. In retrospect we find out what personal and societal toll these two women had to pay for their actions.
